Seeking to grow in faith, we proclaim, celebrate, and share Jesus Christ with all.
—Augustana Mission Statement
Our Story
Augustana has been sharing the good news of Jesus Christ since 1907. Our story began on South Robert Street more than 100 years ago, and we continue to grow and change with each passing year. We are a friendly, caring, and generous faith community of more than 2,200 members in all stages of life.
We are a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the St. Paul Area Synod. We hold to the basic principles of Martin Luther’s theological teachings:
- We are not saved by our action. We are saved by grace through Jesus Christ.
- We act out of love for God and love for our neighbor.
- We trust God who promises us forgiveness and abundant life through Jesus Christ.
- The word of God revealed in the Bible is our norm for faith and life.
We encourage people of all ages to discover—through worship, prayer, lifelong learning, service to others, and giving—all that a personal relationship with Christ offers. At times, living a life of faith can be overwhelming. The highs and lows of life can be challenging. We don’t pretend to have all the answers. Rather, we encourage you to ask the hard questions, and together we will search for the answers through meaningful and respectful conversation.
We are deeply committed to caring for our members and providing spiritual care wherever it is needed. Our pastoral team make hospital visits and bring communion to homebound members. We strongly believe in the benefits of prayer and practice it daily. We pray for those who are hurting and we thank God for the blessings in our lives. The pastoral team considers it a great privilege to walk with you, whether you are joyfully celebrating a baby or marriage or experiencing a difficult life challenge.
With a rich tradition of generosity, we believe that all things come from a good and gracious God who is the source of all our ideas, energy, effort, and results. As part of our stewardship ministry, we share 20% of our member commitments with community mission partners working to address issues of poverty, homelessness, and hunger. In addition, we have global partnerships in Tanzania, Guatemala, and the Middle East.
Our Values
Inspire, challenge and empower God’s people through Christ-centered worship
The heart of our life together is worship. We seek to equip you to go back out into your life inspired and challenged.
Discover all that a personal relationship with Christ offers
Developing your faith never stops! We offer a variety of educational and spiritual opportunities for people of all ages.
Connect people in all phases of life in a dynamic Christian community
From joyfully welcoming a baby into your family to experiencing life’s difficult challenges, the Augustana community is deeply committed to walking with you.
Care and serve others through compassionate outreach
We are called to use all of our resources to reach out with love to all people at Augustana, in our community of West St. Paul, and our world.
Ridiculous generosity in all things reflecting God’s generosity to us
As part of our financial ministry, each year we commit to give away (outside of our doors) 20% of member commitments. We are proud to be one of the top 10 congregations in the country (out of over 11,000) in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) for mission support.
Support and expand our local and global partnerships
We believe that service to our neighbor and world must be an integral part of our lives. Augustana has established and maintains long-term and meaningful relationships with local service organizations. For over 25 years we have had partnerships with a variety of churches, schools and health facilities in Tanzania, Guatemala, and the Middle East.
Honor God by ensuring that all we do is gospel-based and relevant
At Augustana we strive to “keep the main thing the main thing.” In our worship, relationships, service, and giving, we want to keep the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the main thing.
